Etsy fees can vary by country, seller account, tax, currency, payment processor, and policy changes. Verify current Etsy fees in your own seller dashboard.

Payment processing: The default 3% + $0.25 is a common US Etsy Payments example, not a global Etsy fee. Payment processing rates vary by the location of your seller bank account and may apply to shipping and applicable taxes depending on Etsy's rules. Check your Etsy payment account settings for your actual rates.

Not modeled: gift wrapping, personalization fees, taxes, regulatory operating fees, VAT/GST, currency conversion fees, refunds, chargebacks, or Etsy policy-specific edge cases.

How profit is calculated

  • Revenue After Discount = Item Price × (1 − Discount Rate) + Buyer-Paid Shipping
  • Transaction Fee = Revenue After Discount × Transaction Fee Rate
  • Payment Processing Fee = Revenue After Discount × Payment Processing Rate + Fixed Fee
  • Offsite Ads Fee = min(Revenue After Discount × Offsite Ads Rate, $100)
  • Total Costs = Production Cost + Shipping Cost + Listing Fee + Transaction Fee + Payment Processing Fee + Ad Cost + Offsite Ads Fee
  • Net Profit = Revenue After Discount − Total Costs
  • Profit Margin = Net Profit ÷ Revenue After Discount
  • Break-even Price = (Fixed Costs ÷ (1 − Fee Rate Sum) − Buyer-Paid Shipping) ÷ (1 − Discount Rate)

Fixed Costs = Production Cost + Shipping Cost + Listing Fee + Payment Processing Fixed Fee + Ad Cost. These costs do not scale with the order total and are treated as constants in the break-even formula.

Fee rate sum = Transaction Fee Rate + Payment Processing Rate + Offsite Ads Rate.

Offsite ads fees are capped at $100 USD per order by Etsy, regardless of the order total.

The break-even formula uses a linear fee model. When the offsite ads $100 cap applies (high-price listings where revenue × rate exceeds $100), the formula gives a conservative estimate — actual break-even may be slightly lower. For precise numbers at high listing prices, use iterative testing in the calculator.

When discount rate = 0% and offsite ads rate = 0%, the formula simplifies to standard Etsy fee math.

Etsy fees are charged on the order total (item price after discount + shipping paid by buyer).

Common mistakes

  1. 1.Forgetting that Etsy charges fees on the order total, not just the item price — buyer-paid shipping increases your fee base.
  2. 2.Ignoring payment processing fees — 3% + $0.25 is a US Etsy Payments example, not a global rate. These fees add up on every order.
  3. 3.Setting a discount without raising the base price — a 20% discount can wipe out your entire margin on a POD product.
  4. 4.Underestimating production cost — Printify and Printful costs vary by product variant, color, and size. Use the exact cost for each listing.
  5. 5.Neglecting offsite ads fees — if your shop is in the mandatory offsite ads program, Etsy takes 12–15% of the order total on attributed sales.
  6. 6.Pricing based on competitors without running your own numbers — your production cost, shipping, and fee setup may differ.

FAQ

What does this Etsy POD profit calculator do?+

It estimates your net profit, profit margin, break-even item price, and total fees for a single Etsy POD listing. You enter your item price, production cost, shipping, discounts, ad spend, and fee assumptions. The calculator shows whether your listing is likely profitable under those assumptions.

Are the default Etsy fee rates accurate?+

The defaults (6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 payment processing, $0.20 listing fee) are based on common US Etsy Payments examples. Payment processing rates vary by the location of your seller bank account — 3% + $0.25 is the US rate and may differ for sellers in other countries. Actual fees also vary by currency, tax handling, and Etsy policy changes. Always verify your own fees in your Etsy payment settings and update the editable fields.

What is a good profit margin for Etsy POD products?+

There is no single 'right' margin for POD products — it depends on your product category, ad strategy, and volume. Use the calculator to test different price points and see what margin your costs and fees can support. As a planning reference, margins above 30% give more room for ads and discounts; margins below 15% leave thin room for returns and fee changes. The calculator highlights both thresholds so you can quickly compare scenarios.

How is the break-even price calculated?+

The break-even price is the minimum item price that covers all your costs (production, shipping, listing fee, transaction fee, payment processing, ads, and offsite ads) after accounting for discounts and buyer-paid shipping. At this price, net profit is zero.

Does this calculator include offsite ads fees?+

Yes. You can set the offsite ads rate to 0%, 12%, or 15% depending on your Etsy shop's offsite ads status. The calculator applies Etsy's $100 USD per-order cap on offsite ads fees. If you're not in the offsite ads program, leave the rate at 0%.

Can I use this if I sell on Printify or Printful?+

Yes. This calculator is designed for Etsy POD sellers using Printify or Printful. Enter your actual production cost and shipping cost from your POD provider, and adjust the fee rates to match your shop's Etsy fees.

What does this calculator NOT include?+

This calculator does not model gift wrapping fees, personalization fees, sales tax, VAT/GST, regulatory operating fees, currency conversion fees, refund processing, chargebacks, or Etsy policy-specific edge cases. It is a pre-listing estimate tool, not a complete accounting of every possible Etsy fee scenario.

Is this an official Etsy tool?+

No. This is an independent calculator and is not affiliated with Etsy, Printify, or Printful. It is an estimation tool, not financial or accounting advice.
