Etsy Ads are charged per click (CPC), not per sale. This calculator estimates the maximum CPC you can afford based on your assumed conversion rate. Actual CPC and conversion rates vary. Verify your Etsy Ads dashboard for real data.

Etsy Ads vs. Offsite Ads: This calculator focuses on Etsy Ads (CPC-based). Offsite Ads are a separate model where Etsy charges 12–15% of the order total on attributed sales. To model offsite ads impact, use the Etsy POD Profit Calculator and set the offsite ads rate field.

Fee defaults: 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 payment processing, and $0.20 listing fee are editable US Etsy Payments examples. Payment processing rates vary by the location of your seller bank account. Check your Etsy payment settings for your actual rates.

Not modeled: taxes, VAT/GST, currency conversion fees, regulatory operating fees, gift wrapping, personalization fees, refunds, chargebacks, country-specific payment processing rules, or Etsy policy edge cases.

This calculator is an independent estimation tool, not financial or accounting advice.

How ad break-even is calculated

  • Revenue = Item Price + Buyer-Paid Shipping
  • Fees = Revenue × (Transaction Fee Rate + Payment Processing Rate) + Payment Processing Fixed Fee + Listing Fee
  • Profit Before Ads = Revenue − Production Cost − Shipping Cost − Fees
  • Max Ad Cost Per Order = Profit Before Ads − Target Profit
  • Break-even CPC = Max Ad Cost Per Order × Conversion Rate
  • Expected Ad Cost Per Order = Expected CPC ÷ Conversion Rate
  • Expected Profit After Ads = Profit Before Ads − Expected Ad Cost Per Order
  • Required Conversion Rate = Expected CPC ÷ Max Ad Cost Per Order

If Max Ad Cost Per Order is ≤ $0, there is no ad room at your current price, costs, and target profit.

Break-even CPC is the most you can pay per click and still meet your target profit at the assumed conversion rate.

Expected Ad Cost Per Order converts your expected CPC into a per-sale cost using your conversion rate.

Required Conversion Rate tells you what conversion rate you would need to break even at your expected CPC.

Example

A seller prices an item at $25.00 with $4.99 buyer-paid shipping. Production cost is $12.00 and shipping cost is $4.50. They want to keep at least $2.00 profit per order after ads, estimate a 2% conversion rate, and expect to pay $0.25 per click.

Buyer-paid shipping$4.99
Production cost$12.00
Shipping cost$4.50

Payment processing rate3.0%

Total fees (before ads)$3.30
Profit before ads$10.19
Max ad cost per order$8.19
Break-even CPC$0.16
Expected ad cost per order$12.50
Expected profit after ads−$2.31
Required conversion rate3.1%

At $0.25 CPC and 2% conversion, the expected ad cost per order is $12.50 — exceeding the $8.19 max ad budget by $4.31. The seller would need a ~3.1% conversion rate just to break even at this CPC. This example assumes US fee defaults. Actual results depend on your real costs and Etsy Ads data.

Common mistakes

  1. 1.Assuming a high conversion rate without data — use your own Etsy Ads dashboard data when available. If you have none yet, compare conservative scenarios like 1%, 2%, and 3% to stress-test your ad room.
  2. 2.Forgetting that Etsy fees still apply on ad-driven sales — the transaction fee, payment processing fee, and listing fee are the same whether the sale came from ads or organic traffic.
  3. 3.Confusing Etsy Ads (CPC) with Offsite Ads (attributed-sale fee) — Etsy Ads charge per click regardless of sale, while Offsite Ads take 12–15% only on attributed orders. This calculator models Etsy Ads CPC; use the Profit Calculator for offsite ads.
  4. 4.Setting target profit to $0 without considering returns and refunds — even a 'break-even' ad strategy can lose money if any orders are returned.
  5. 5.Not checking actual Etsy Ads CPC in your dashboard — actual CPC varies widely depending on competition. An expected CPC that seems reasonable may be far from your actuals.

FAQ

What does the Etsy Ads break-even calculator do?+

It calculates how much you can spend on Etsy Ads per order while still meeting your target profit. It shows your profit before ads, your maximum ad cost per sale, and your break-even CPC based on an assumed conversion rate.

What is a break-even CPC?+

Break-even CPC is the maximum cost-per-click you can pay for Etsy Ads and still hit your target profit, given your conversion rate. If your actual CPC is higher than this, each ad-driven sale loses money on a per-order basis.

What conversion rate should I use?+

Use your own Etsy Ads dashboard data when available. If you do not have data yet, compare conservative scenarios such as 1%, 2%, and 3% to see how sensitive your ad room is to conversion rate assumptions. Conversion rates vary by product category, listing quality, price point, and season.

Why does my listing show no room for ads?+

If your profit before ads is already at or below your target profit, there is no budget left for ad spend. The calculator will display a 'No ad room' status. You may need to increase your item price, lower production costs, or accept a lower target profit.

Does this calculator guarantee my Etsy Ads will be profitable?+

No. It provides an estimate based on your inputs and assumed conversion rate. Actual CPC, conversion rate, and competition vary. Use it as a planning tool before launching ads, and monitor your Etsy Ads dashboard regularly.

Does Etsy charge fees on ad-attributed sales the same way?+

Yes. Etsy transaction and payment processing fees apply to the full order total regardless of whether the sale came from ads. This calculator includes those standard fees as editable defaults.

Is this calculator for Etsy Ads or Offsite Ads?+

This calculator is for Etsy Ads (CPC-based cost-per-click). Offsite Ads are a separate program where Etsy charges 12–15% of the order total on attributed sales — they are not CPC-based. To model offsite ads, use the Etsy POD Profit Calculator and set the offsite ads rate field. Both Etsy Ads fees and offsite ads fees are separate from the transaction and payment processing fees.

What fees are not included in this calculator?+

This calculator does not model taxes, VAT/GST, currency conversion fees, regulatory operating fees, gift wrapping, personalization fees, refunds, chargebacks, or country-specific payment processing rules. The default fee rates are editable US Etsy Payments examples. Verify your actual fees in your Etsy payment settings.
